Guaranteed and Quality

You just bought a house. The previous owners handed you two keys at closing. But during the three months the house was on the market, how many people had access? The real estate agent. The showing agents. Contractors doing repairs. The home inspector. The appraiser.

Who made copies? Who still has keys floating around? You have no idea.

Or maybe you’re a business owner who just let an employee go. They turned in their keys, sure. But did they make copies first? You’re lying awake at night wondering if someone who’s angry at you has access to your business, your inventory, your cash register.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to replace all your locks. You just need to rekey them.

At Doylestown Locksmith, we specialize in professional lock rekeying for homes and businesses. We change the internal mechanism so your existing locks work with completely new keys – and all the old keys become useless. Same hardware, new security, significantly less cost than replacement.

How lock rekeying actually works

Most people don’t understand what rekeying means or how it’s possible to make the same lock work with a completely different key. Here’s the explanation:

Inside your lock cylinder

Your door lock contains a cylinder (the part that rotates when you turn your key). Inside that cylinder are a series of pin stacks – usually five or six of them, lined up in a row.

Each pin stack has two pins:

  • A key pin on the bottom (touches your key)
  • A driver pin on top (pushed down by a spring)

When there’s no key in the lock, the driver pins cross what’s called the shear line – the gap between the cylinder and the housing. Because the driver pins are blocking this gap, the cylinder can’t rotate. The lock stays locked.

How your key works

Your key has cuts (the peaks and valleys along the edge) at different depths. Each cut corresponds to one pin stack.

When you insert your correct key:

  • Each cut lifts its pin stack to a specific height
  • The key pins lift up until they reach the height of your key’s cut at that position
  • The driver pins lift up just enough to align perfectly at the shear line
  • Now ALL the driver pins are exactly at the shear line – not blocking it
  • The cylinder can rotate freely
  • Your lock unlocks

This is why only your key works. Any other key has different cut depths, so the pins don’t align at the shear line, and the cylinder stays blocked.

What we do when rekeying

Here’s the process:

  1. We remove the cylinder from your lock
  2. We take out all the old key pins
  3. We measure your new key’s cut depths
  4. We install new key pins that match your new key’s cuts
  5. We reassemble everything

Now here’s the magic: the old key pins no longer match your new key. If someone tries to use an old key, the pins won’t align at the shear line. The lock won’t turn. The old key is useless.

But your new key? Perfect alignment. The lock works smoothly.

The entire lock hardware is identical – same cylinder, same springs, same housing, same bolt mechanism. But it responds to a completely different key.

This is why rekeying provides the same security as a new lock (assuming your lock hardware is in good condition). There’s no way for someone with the old key to use it. The mathematics of the pin heights simply don’t work anymore.

When you need lock rekeying

Let’s talk about the real situations where rekeying makes sense:

You just moved into a new home. You have no idea how many keys exist. The real estate agent had keys. Contractors had keys. The previous owners could have made a dozen copies over the years. You need to establish control from day one. Rekeying gives you a fresh start – only you and the people you choose have working keys.

A relationship ended. Your ex has keys to your place. You don’t want confrontation, and you don’t want to spend $1,000 replacing all your locks. Rekeying quietly makes their keys stop working without drama or huge expense.

You lost your keys. Maybe they’re at the bottom of a lake. Maybe someone stole your purse. Maybe they just vanished. If your keys had any identifying information or if someone knows where you live, you need to rekey them immediately. It’s much cheaper than replacing every lock.

A tenant just moved out. During their three years living there, they probably made copies for family members, friends, dog walkers, or house sitters. You have no idea how many keys are out there. Before the next tenant moves in, rekeying ensures only new keys work.

You fired an employee. They had keys to your business. They returned them, but did they make copies? Do you really want to take that risk with your inventory, equipment, and business data? Rekeying restores security and peace of mind.

You have too many keys. Your house has six exterior doors. Six different keys. Your keychain is ridiculous. You fumble in the dark trying to figure out which key opens which door. Rekeying them “keyed alike” means one key opens everything. Simple.

After a break-in attempt. Someone tried to break in but didn’t succeed. Your locks held, but you’re shaken. Even if they didn’t get in, rekeying eliminates any worry about compromised keys and lets you sleep soundly again.

Contractor access ended. You gave keys to contractors for a renovation project. The work is done, but those keys are still out there. Rekeying brings control back to you.

In all these situations, rekeying gives you the security you need without the cost and hassle of replacing all your lock hardware.

Rekeying vs. replacing vs. repairing - which do you need?

People often confuse these services. Here’s the clear breakdown:

Lock rekeying

What it is: Changing the internal pins so new keys work and old keys don’t. The lock hardware stays the same.

When to choose it:

  • Your lock hardware is in good condition
  • You want to control who has access (lost keys, moved in, employee left)
  • You want to save money compared to replacement
  • You need keyed alike systems or master key systems

Cost: $20-35 per lock, or $125-200 for 5-6 locks

Time: 10-20 minutes per lock

Lock replacement

What it is: Removing the entire lock and installing completely new hardware.

When to choose it:

  • Your locks are old, worn, or low quality
  • You want to upgrade security (from Grade 3 to Grade 1)
  • The lock is damaged beyond repair
  • You want modern features (smart locks, keyless entry)
  • The lock hardware is outdated or ugly

Cost: $150-250 per lock installed

Time: 20-45 minutes per lock

For lock replacement needs, see our lock installation or lock changes services.

Lock repair

What it is: Fixing a lock that’s malfunctioning – sticky, jammed, broken parts, misalignment.

When to choose it:

  • Your lock isn’t working smoothly
  • Keys stick or are hard to turn
  • The bolt doesn’t extend fully
  • Components are broken but the lock is worth saving

Cost: $75-250 depending on the problem

Time: 30-60 minutes typically

For lock repair needs, see our lock repair service for complete information.

The bottom line: If your locks work fine but you need to control who has access, rekeying is almost always your best option. It’s faster and significantly cheaper than replacement, with the same security result.

Keyed alike systems - One key for everything

Here’s a common frustration: you have six exterior doors on your house. Front door, back door, side door, garage entry, basement door, shed. Six different locks. Six different keys on your keychain.

In the dark, in the rain, with arms full of groceries, you fumble through your keys trying to find the right one. It’s annoying and inefficient.

The solution: keyed alike.

When we rekey your locks “keyed alike,” we configure all of them to work with the same key. One key opens your front door, back door, garage, everything.

Who needs this:

  • Homeowners with multiple entry points
  • Property managers with multiple units that should share some access
  • Small businesses with multiple exterior doors

The benefit: Simplicity. One key to carry. No confusion. Life just got easier.

We can configure any combination you want. Maybe you want all exterior doors on one key, but interior doors on different keys. Or all doors except one secure room. We set it up however makes sense for you.

After rekeying to a keyed alike system, you’ll probably want spare keys made. Our key duplication service can create as many copies as you need.

Master key systems for businesses

If you run a business with multiple employees and multiple doors, you need more sophisticated access control than “everyone gets the same key.”

That’s where a master key system comes in.

How it works

A master key system creates a hierarchy of access:

Master key (you, the owner): Opens every single lock in the building Sub-master keys (managers): Open specific areas like offices + storage + bathrooms Employee keys (staff): Open only the doors they need – maybe just the front entrance and break room Restricted keys (cleaning crew): Only bathrooms and common areas

Everyone can access what they need, but nobody except you has access to everything.

Who needs a master key system

  • Retail businesses with multiple departments or storage areas
  • Office buildings with individual offices and shared spaces
  • Warehouses with different security zones
  • Apartment complexes with unit doors and common areas
  • Medical offices with different levels of patient privacy areas
  • Schools with classrooms, offices, storage, and secure areas

Why it matters

Security and convenience. Your manager doesn’t need a keychain with 15 keys. They get one key that opens what they need. When an employee leaves, you only need to rekey the specific locks they had access to, not the entire building.

We can design and implement master key systems of any complexity. For detailed information about master key systems, visit our dedicated master key system page.

Our lock rekeying process

Here’s what happens when you call us:

You contact us at +1 267-440-6484 and explain your situation. How many locks need rekeying? Is it residential or commercial? Do you want them keyed alike or different? Do you need it done urgently?

We provide a quote. Based on the number and type of locks, we can usually give you an accurate estimate over the phone. No surprises.

We come to you. Our mobile locksmith van arrives at your location fully equipped with the tools and parts needed for rekeying. You don’t bring locks to us – we bring the service to you.

We inspect your locks. Before starting, we check the condition of your locks. If they’re in good shape, rekeying makes sense. If we find a lock that’s worn, damaged, or low quality, we’ll discuss whether replacement might be a better option for that particular lock.

You approve the work. We confirm the quote, explain exactly what we’ll do, and answer any questions. You decide whether to proceed.

We rekey your locks. For each lock, we remove the cylinder, replace the pins to match your new key configuration, reassemble everything, and test it thoroughly. If you want locks keyed alike, we configure them all to the same key. If you’re setting up a master key system, we configure the proper hierarchy.

We cut your new keys. We’ll cut as many copies of your new key(s) as you need – typically 2-4 per lock or key system.

We test everything. We don’t just hand you keys and leave. We test each lock multiple times to ensure smooth operation from both sides of the door.

We provide documentation. You get a receipt, information about your new keys, and if relevant, documentation of your keyed alike or master key configuration.

Most residential rekeying jobs (4-6 locks) take 45-90 minutes total. Commercial jobs depend on scale and complexity.

Lock rekeying questions answered

How long does it take to rekey a lock?

For a single lock, typically 10-20 minutes. For multiple locks, we work efficiently – expect about 45-90 minutes for a typical house with 4-6 locks. Larger commercial projects take longer depending on the number of locks and complexity of keying systems.

For residential:

  • Single lock: $30-50
  • 3-5 locks: $100-175
  • 6-8 locks (keyed alike): $175-275

For commercial:

  • Small office (5-10 locks): $150-300
  • Larger commercial (15+ locks): $300-500+
  • Master key system setup: $400-800+ depending on complexity

Compare this to lock replacement which typically costs $150-250 per lock installed. If you have 6 locks, replacement would be $900-1,500 versus $175-275 for rekeying.

Yes, absolutely – if the lock hardware is in good condition. Rekeying changes the internal configuration so old keys no longer work. There’s no security difference between a rekeyed lock and a brand new lock of the same quality.

The only time replacement is more secure is if you’re upgrading from a low-security lock to a high-security lock, or if your current lock is worn or damaged.

Rekeying keeps your existing lock hardware and changes the internal pins. Changing (replacing) locks means removing the entire lock and installing new hardware.

Choose rekeying when your locks are in good condition and you just need to control access. Choose replacement when you want to upgrade security, your locks are worn or damaged, or you want modern features like smart locks.

Yes. If you have other locks you want to match, or if you want to keep using your current key for convenience, we can rekey new locks to match your existing key pattern. This is common when adding a new door to a keyed alike system.

Technically yes, but it’s not recommended unless you have locksmith experience. You need:

  • A rekeying kit specific to your lock brand
  • Understanding of pin sizing and coding systems
  • Proper tools and workspace
  • Patience and precision

A mistake means your lock won’t work at all. Professional rekeying costs $30-50 per lock and comes with guaranteed work. The DIY savings of $15-20 per lock isn’t worth the risk for most people.

Indefinitely, as long as the lock hardware remains in good condition. Each rekeying replaces the pins but doesn’t damage the cylinder. Eventually your lock will wear out from daily use over 15-25 years, but that’s from use, not from being rekeyed.

Absolutely. Rekeying after a break-in attempt (even a failed one) is smart. We’ll inspect the lock for any damage that might compromise security. If the hardware is still sound, rekeying gives you new keys and peace of mind. If there’s damage, we may recommend replacement for that lock.

Most lock warranties cover professional rekeying. DIY rekeying might void it, depending on the manufacturer. We’re professional locksmiths, so our work typically doesn’t affect warranty coverage.

For residential rekeying, yes – both for security verification and so we can hand you your new keys. For commercial rekeying, we can work with a property manager or authorized representative if the business owner can’t be present.

No problem. We can configure any combination you want:

  • All keyed different (each lock gets unique key)
  • Some keyed alike, others different
  • Master key system with hierarchical access
  • Whatever makes sense for your security needs

Yes, we can rekey most high-security locks including brands like Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Schlage Primus. Some high-security locks use patented keyways that require special authorization and key blanks. We’ll let you know what’s possible for your specific locks.
