Why the frame and strike plate matter as much as the lock
The most common misconception about lock replacement is that the lock itself is where the security lives. It is not. Most forced entries defeat the strike plate and door frame, not the lock cylinder. A deadbolt with a bolt that extends an inch into the frame is only as secure as the wood it is extending into.
A standard strike plate installed with the short screws that come in the box is held by three-quarters of an inch of door jamb material. A well-placed kick transfers enough force to pull those screws straight out. The door opens. The lock was never involved.
Every lock replacement we do includes an assessment of the strike plate and frame condition. Where the existing strike is inadequate, we install a heavy-duty strike plate with three-inch screws that reach past the jamb into the structural framing behind it. That change, combined with a quality deadbolt, is what actually makes a door harder to force.
